Mstislav V. Keldysh is a Soviet scientist in the field of mathematics and mechanics, theorist of cosmonautics, president of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
He played a crucial role in the development of computational and machine mathematics, the creation of effective methods of calculation applied in nuclear and space technology. He was one of the initiators of the expansion of works on space exploration and the creation of space rocket systems, from the middle of 1950th, he had been taking the lead in formulation of theoretical preconditions of the withdrawal of artificial bodies into circumterrestrial orbits, and further - flights to the Moon and other planets of the solar system. He also directed the scientific and technical council on the coordination of activity of Scientific Research Institute and Design-engineering Department on creation of the first artificial Earth satellite. He made an enormous contribution to the realization of programs of manned flights, formulation of scientific problems and carrying out of researches of near-Earth space, interplanetary medium, the Moon and other planets, to the solution of many problems of space flight mechanics and theory of control, navigation and heat transfer.
The postage stamp depicts a portrait of Mstislav Keldysh, the first artificial Earth satellite and the formula of the Keldysh condition (of the completeness of the eigenfunction).
