The Series “Outstanding Historians of Russia”

 

Vasiliy Osipovich Klyuchevskiy (1841-1911) was born in the family of a village priest. In 1865 he graduated from the historical-philological faculty of Moscow University. Since 1867 he began teaching practice. In 1872 he presented the "Old Russian Lives of the Saints as a Historical Source" master's thesis, in 1882 was presented "Boyar Duma of Ancient Rus'" doctoral thesis.
Since 1882, Vasiliy Klyuchevskiy was the professor of Russian history at Moscow University, from 1889 he was a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, in 1900 he became the Academician of History and Antiquities of Russian, since 1908 - Honorary Academician of belles-lettres. With the 1880s he was a member of the Moscow Archaeological Society, the Society of Russian literature, Moscow Society of Russian History and Antiquities (chairman in 1893-1905).
The most famous scientific work of Vasiliy Klyuchevskiy, what received worldwide recognition is The course of Russian history in 5 parts.

Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin (1766-1826) was the son of a landowner of Simbirsk province. Educated at home, then in Moscow - in a private school (until 1783); also attended lectures at Moscow University.
The literary activity of Nikolai Karamzin, the recognized head of the Russian sentimentalism, played a major role in improving the image of person's inner world, in the development of Russian literary language. He was publishing "Moscow Journal" magazine (1791-1792), where he have published his own works. Early prose of Nikolai Karamzin was influenced by works of Zhukovsky, Batiushkov and young Pushkin.
Since the mid-1790s he identified his interest to the problems of history. He leaves the fiction and works mainly on the "History of the Russian State" (Vol. 1-12, 1816-1829), one of the most significant works in Russian historiography. The historical concept of Karamzin became the official concept, supported by a public authority.
