Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna Macarius (Bulgakov) is an outstanding Russian thinker and public figure. The author of the multivolume works "Orthodox dogmatic theology" and "History of the Russian Church”, the founder of the awards for promotion of talents, devoting themselves to the cause of science and public knowledge.
Metropolitan Macarius (Bulgakov) was born in 1816, in Moscow. In 1841-1842 years taught Russian Church and civil history at the Kiev theological Academy. In 1843 he was approved to the rank of extraordinary Professor of theology by the Synod. In 1844-1857 years was an ordinary Professor of dogmatic theology of St. Petersburg theological Academy and since 1850 he was appointed to the position of rector.
The prize in the theological, humanitarian and natural Sciences were founded by Metropolitan Macarius in 1867, these prizes are awarded in five nominations: "The History of the Orthodox Church”, “The History of Russia”, “The History of Moscow and the historical Ethnography", "The History of Orthodox countries and peoples," also a workbook or a training manual represents the contribution to the science in one of these categories.
The postage stamp features the portrait of Metropolitan Macarius (the fragment of the V.V. Shilovs’ picture) on the background of the Moscow Kremlin Assumption of the Cathedral and the Church of the prophet Elijah (Exaltation) in Moscow.
