The tray was painted in the 1880s in the workshop of V.O.Vishnyakov. The painting evolved in the early 19th century in the village of Zhostovo (Moscow Region), as a type of hand-painted metallic trays with lacquer finish. The first trays were made of papier-mache, then metallic base became popular.

The Rostov Enamel evolved in Rostov, Yaroslav Region, in the 18th century. The miniatures were painted in transparent fireproof colours upon enamelled copper surfaces (small icons, portraits, landscapes). Later flower ornaments and compositions started to be used again. The stamp features a miniature icon (late 19th c).

The Fedoskino laquer became famous in the 19th century and made a start for miniature painting on papier-mache. Nowadays several following genres are being developed: landscape, portrait and also narrative compositiions with traditional "haymakings", "troikas", and modern life themes.
