M.I.Petipa (1818-1910), a ballet-master, was born in Marseille and a was of French extraction. In 1838-46 he worked as a dancer and a choreographer in the theatres of Bordeaux, Nantes and Madrid. In 1847 he moved to Russia. In 1855-86 he he taught in the St.Petersburg theatre studio. In the 1890s M.I.Petipa worked side by side with P.I.Tchaikovsky and A.K.Glazunov. Such ballets as "The Sleeping Beauty" (1890), "Raimonda" (1898), the classical duet of Odillia and the Prince from "The Swan Lake" (1895) have not lost their value to the present time. The stamps feature the scenes from these ballets.
