Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1883–1945) is a writer, a poet, a playwright and a publicist. He started his career as a writer in 1907 when he published his book of poems. However, he created his most significant works during the Soviet period. In the 1920-s he published a number of science fiction works, such as the story “Aelita” (1922–1923), the novel “The Garin Death Ray” (1925–1927). One of his most important works is a trilogy “The Road to Calvary” that he started in Paris in 1921 and finished in 1941. And the incomplete novel “Peter I” is considered to be the best historic novel of the Soviet period in the history of Russian literature. There is a portrait of A.N. Tolstoy (photo by B.
