Altai is the native land of the modern Turkic nations of the world. The ancient Turks founded their state – kaganat and the Turkic language was spread among all the nations of the planet owing to Orkhon runic written language. The altai people voluntary joined the Russian state in 1756 and the lands and the people of Altai constituted a part of Tomsk province. The Ojrot autonomic region was founded consisting a part of Altai region in 1922. It was renamed into Gorno-Altaisk autonomic region in 1948. This region was transformed into Gorno-Altaisk republic consisting a part of the Russian Federation on the 3d of July, 1991. It was renamed into Altai republic in May, 1992. A griffin – the tattoo of the Altai princess Ukok – is depicted on the stamp.
