The New Year Festivities took place for the 1st time on the 1st of January, 1700, according to Peter the Great’s order. The tradition of decorating fir trees, of letting off fireworks and of other entertainments as well as of giving presents to each on the New Year Eve dates back to this time. Christmas is a great day for all the Christian world and it has always been accompanied by colorful traditions. It was considered to be one of the main family festivals in many countries as well as in Russia. Lights which symbolized the family hearth could be seen everywhere. Candles were put out on the fir trees, the children sang Christmas hymns. Christmas bells rang. The Nativity of Jesus Christ blended with the ancient Slavonic festival – Svjatki (yule-tide). The yule-tide traditions – the yule-tide feasts, singing of yule-tide carols and the fortune-telling had gradually turned into Christmas traditions.
