Vyborg is a town in Leningrad region on the seaboard of the Finnish bay. In the 12th century there was a settlement at the spot. In 1293 the Swedes occupied Western Karelia and built a fortress Vyborg featured on the stamp. Later there appeared a town round the fortress. During the North war (1700-1721) in 1710 Vyborg was taken by storm by Peter the Great and fixed to Russia in 1721. In 1811 Vyborg was attached to the great principality of Finland. A hundred years later, on Mar 12 1940 Vyborg was returned to the USSR. The stamp also features a ribbon with the title "Vyborg" and a cartouche with the words "The 700th anniversary".
