№ 1459. The 200th anniversary of birth of Nikolay Pirogov.

Pirogov, Nikolai Ivanovich (1810-1881) is a great Russian scientist, physician, educator, founder of the military surgery and anatomical experimental trend in surgery, public figure, corresponding member of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Souvenir sheet of one stamp is dedicated to the 200th birth anniversary of the surgeon.
Nikolai Ivanovich laid the foundation of operative surgery, introduced a number of new medical techniques and methods of surgical operations, and gave the anatomical and physiological explanation for them. He became the first surgeon in the history of mankind  to use anesthesia in a field operations of the acting army. Pirogov is also an author of many tractates on surgery and anatomy, including the atlas “Topographic anatomy” (1851-54), which has received worldwide recognition.
The Society of Russian physicians, which regularly convenes Pirogov Congresses, was founded in memory of Pirogov. The 2-nd Moscow, Odessa and Vinnitsa Medical Institutes were given his name.
