The Battle of Sinop was held in the bay of Sinop during the Crimean war (185301856). The Russian squadron led by Vice-Admiral P.S.Nakhimov destroyed the Turkish squadron of Osman Pasha. The Battle of Sinop was the last battle of the epoch of sailing. The stamp and the margins of the sheet feature a picture by A.P.Bogolyubov "The Battle of Sinop. 18 November 1853". The picture was painted in 1856-1860 and is kept in the Central Naval museum in St.Petersburg. The margins feature the portrait of Admiral P.S.Nakhimov and the words of Nikolay I.
