The Pokrovsky Cathedral was erected in 1555-1561 in Moscow by the architects Barma and Postnik as a memorial to the conquest of Kazan by Ivan IV in 1552 and to the warriors who died in this battle. A Moscow wacky Vasiliy Blazhenny was buried near the cathedral walls. Above his coffin in the north-east corner of the cathedral a side-altar was made, and then the cathedral obtained its second name - St Basil's cathedral.
