Ivan Bilibin's illustration to "Volga", a Russian epic (bylina) (1902). Volga, or Volga Svyatoslavovich, is a hero of bylinas, a warrior prince. He combines the characteristic features of both an ideal warrior and hunter, and a wizard. Bylinas about Volga, with some variations, originated in Novgorod in the 15th century. They reflected a series of notable features of day-to-day life of ancient Russians: hunting, agriculture, contribution collected by princes, and trading.
