V.D.Polenov (1844-1927) was a painter. In 1863-1871 he studied in the Academy of Arts, read for the law in the St.Petersburg University and took private lessons from P.P.Chistyakov and I.N.Kramskoy. He took part in Serbia-Turkish war of 1876 as a volunteer and in Ruissian-Turkish war of 1877-1878 as a reporter painter. In some of his works Polenov used academic school methods. It had an impact on his evangelical canvases. The stamp features a large canvas "Jesus Christ and a sinner", 1887, which is kept in the Russian museum in St.Petersbug. The landscapes and architectural backgrounds of the evangelical canvases and especially some studies, made during his journeys to Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Greece (1881-1882 and 1889), show the remarkable art of plein-air painting, the ability of the painter to show the peculiar beauty of the nature. In the 1890s Polenov worked on the landscape "Indian Summer", 1893, featured on the stamp. The canvas is kept in the house-museum of V.D.Polenov in Tula region. Polenov spent the rest of his life in the hall Borok, where he directed the village theatre coteries. The coupon between the stamps features the portrait of V.D.Polenov, his first name, last name, patronymic and his life years.
