M.I. Kutuzov (1745-1813) was a general and a Field Marshal. He took part in Russian-Turkish wars of the 18th century and became famous during the assault of Izmail. During the Russian-Austrian-French war of 1805 he handled the Russian troops in Austria and led them out of the entrapment. During the Russian-Turkish war of 1806-1812 he was the Commander-in-Chief of the Moldavian army and concluded the Bucharest peace treaty. During the Patriotic war of 1812 M.I.Kutuzov was the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian army and defeated Napoleon's troops. The stamp features the portrait of M.I.Kutuzov created after a picture by George Daw. The background features the sculpture group "Soldiers" which is a part of a memorial to M.I.Kutuzov and glorious sons of Russia who won in the Patriotic war of 1812 (by N.V.Tomsky and L.G.Golubovskiy, Moscow, 1973).
